Carry it on
A wig is valuable and hard to replace on a trip. Keep it in your carry-on so it can't be lost, crushed, or left in a hot hold. If you're bringing a second wig, the same goes for that one.
How to pack it
- Best: a hard wig box or a hat box, with the wig on a small foam head or loosely filled with tissue so it holds its shape.
- Good: a satin bag, with the wig folded front to back, the hair on the outside, packed on top of soft clothes.
- Brush it out and tie long hair loosely first so it doesn't tangle in transit.
At airport security
In the U.S., the TSA says you can wear a wig or head covering through screening, though an officer may ask to do a pat-down if it alarms the scanner. You can ask for that to be done in a private room, and to have a female officer. Allowing a little extra time keeps it calm.
A small travel kit
- Wig brush or wide-tooth comb
- Travel-size sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner
- A collapsible wig stand
- Bobby pins, T-pins, and a spare wig cap
- A satin bag or scarf for overnight
- A small heat protectant if you'll be styling
Hotel tips
Hotel hair dryers and irons often run hotter than yours, so start on the lowest setting. Keep the wig on its stand away from the air conditioner or heater vents, which dry hair out quickly. If you're away for Shabbos or Yom Tov, set the style before it begins so you don't need to restyle.
