Home care versus a professional refresh
Washing and brushing at home keeps a wig clean. Over months of daily wear, though, the hair gets drier at the ends, the style drops, and the cap can stretch. A professional refresh deals with those things: a deep wash and condition, a fresh cut and set, and a check of the cap and knots.
Six signs it's time
- Tangling at the nape. The hair at the back of the neck rubs against collars and scarves all day. When it mats there, the ends usually need care.
- More shedding than usual. A few hairs in the brush is normal. Noticeably more can mean knots are loosening.
- It won't hold a style. If the wig falls flat right after you set it, the hair may need a deep condition or a professional restyle.
- The fit has changed. A wig that slides, lifts at the front, or feels tight may need its cap adjusted or re-fit.
- Thin spots. Areas that look sparser than before can often be filled in by adding hair.
- The color looks flat. Sun and washing fade human hair over time.
How often
For a wig worn most days, many women book a refresh every few months. A wig kept for Shabbos and simchas needs it less often. Let the signs above guide you more than the calendar.
