What summer does to a wig
Humidity makes human hair frizz and lose its curl or straightness. Sweat and sunscreen build up inside the cap. Strong sun slowly fades the color. None of this is a reason to stop wearing your wig, but it changes the routine a little.
Five summer habits
- Wash a bit more often. Sweat and salt dry out the hair and the cap. In hot months, washing every week or so of daily wear is common.
- Use a light anti-frizz product. A small amount of serum or leave-in on the lengths helps the hair hold up to humidity. Keep heavy oils off the cap.
- Choose a style that likes humidity. Loose waves and ponytails hold up better in muggy weather than a sleek blow-out.
- Protect it from the sun. A hat outdoors protects the color. At home, keep the stand out of sunny windows.
- Give your scalp air. When you're home, take the wig off for a while and let your scalp breathe. A thin, breathable wig cap underneath also helps.
Consider a falls or a topper
On very hot days some women prefer a fall or topper worn with a hat or headband. It's lighter than a full wig and covers less of the head.
